After playing a bit of Code Vein, I expected this to play the same. Annoying to play and overall bland. It was not that at all. Gameplay and combat felt how it should – impactful and fluid – and it helped lift up an already dull story. I never felt as though I was overpowered, but I also never felt underpowered. It was a perfect balance as we went through the story missions. That was until we got to the penultimate boss fight.
The difficulty spike was something that I was not expecting. While we were able to struggle through most battles without deaths fairly well, the second to final fight was something of a roadblock. We ended up recruiting a 3rd player just to run distraction so we could heal, and even then our attacks felt like we were using foam prop weapons.
After struggling with that fight for over 3 hours, we made it to the final boss – DragonFucker as we called him by the end of it. It took two play sessions – a collective 6 hours – to beat his ass into submission. After beating him down, it is implied that you have to fend him/his minions off while something something something story happens, but it just ended up being us running around in a circle dodging attacks until a cutscene played.
We could have easily just moved to a previous area and grinded out levels, but what’s the fun in that? Would it feel as sweet as it did to beat the final boss if it were easier? Maybe, I’ll never know. Part of my enjoyment at the end came from it not being a cakewalk and I ended up not hating it.
